Lost Cache - Double Waterfall at the Gaylord

Here's one more from our trip to stay in Nashville's Gaylord Hotel and Resort.  Half of this double-waterfall was posted here (and here as a bookmark), and I guess this was set aside for a later date.  Well, here it is...

As mentioned in the bookmark post, I used a tripod to capture this picture.  Tripods really improve the quality of a photograph, but there isn't much opportunity in our present lifestyle to carry one around and set it up.  For this and many other of the better pics of the Nashville Gaylord I had to break away from the family for a while to devote the time necessary to do these things once a subject was identified.  This is creativity, which can't be rushed!

Lost Cache - Mill (?) on the Cumberland in Nashville

This was taken while on the steamer in Nashville.  The kids were calmly enjoying the sights while I went crazy snapping pictures, running to and fro on the top deck.

It still amuses me to remember that at one time, of all the places we'd been in the world, the kids voted Nashville as their favorite family vacation.  The original series from that trip was posted here.

Lost Cache - Nashville Steamer

Some of the pictures in the lost cache were set aside because I simply didn't know what to do with them at the time.  This is one such case: I couldn't figure out whether I wanted to crop to what you see above, or to include the wider perspective seen below.  Since then I've taken to publishing both in one post:

Lost Cache - Interesting Bark in Lost Maples

...captured simply because it was interesting to me, not so much for the composition or technical quality.  This is one of the first pictures taken as we entered the park on that June day in 2006.

Lost Cache - Tree Branch Pattern in Lost Maples

By the time we made the trip to Lost Maples in 2006 I'd already developed an interest in photographing tree branch patterns.  In fact, the first pic posted of a tree branch pattern was in 2004, at Longwood Gardens in Delaware (seen here).

Lost Cache - Swimming in Lost Maples

This was captured on the same trip...it was here that I began to like taking picture of things through things.

Lost Cache - Palo Duro Canyon, Striated Clay

The striations in this clay of Palo Duro Canyon were first featured here in the 2013 series.  I'm finding that these newly-discovered pictures were probably secondary to the ones published at the time, but there's nothing wrong with giving them new life here...

Lost Cache - Hummingbird Friend

I've been organizing my computer files, and found a folder with a cache of pictures set aside for this blog but never published.  So for the next few weeks those'll get knocked out before the next regular series.

Back in June of 2006 we went to Lost Maples here in Texas for a two-night campout.  This was captured with the Fujifilm FinePix S7000 of our daughter and a little friend.  Another frame of same burst posted here when the original series was first published.

Bookmark - Fiery Sky with Winter Branches

This bookmark was a long time coming...

For two years I'd been watching this small leafless tree outside of our bedroom window during our short Houston winters, waiting for the day when the sunrise would look like this.  And I almost missed it!  I had just stepped into the shower upstairs when this sky caught the corner of my eye through the window.  My gosh...can't wait now, can I?  I jumped out of the shower, threw a towel on and, soaking wet, raced downstairs with Bigger Cahoona in hand.  After snapping away for a couple of minutes ended up with a few keepers, of which this was my favorite.

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Modern Interior

This, the last in the series, was the view from atop the staircase featured in yesterday's post.

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Spiral Staircase / Flickering Flourescents

Thought this spiral staircase with all the fluorescent lights was kind of neat.  But something came of it that I didn't expect.  As stated earlier, I bracket nearly all of my photographs for exposure, which changes the shutter speed.  Instead of the usual three exposures, however, since it was indoors and I wasn't as sure of the lighting I switched it to five.  This made it so the darkest frame had a shutter speed of 1/1600 sec. (The one above is a cozier 1/250 sec)

Well, fluorescent bulbs flicker...the reason they give some people headaches.  This is also explains why the frame below, shot at 1/1600 of a second, shows some bulbs on and others off, which happens too fast for our brains to process, which is the reason they look continuously on to us.  But they couldn't fool the Bigger Cahoona!  Interesting how technology can capture things we don't even see or notice:

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Rooftop Garden with Cityscape

I debated publishing this one but decided What the heck...  Here we have the rooftop garden with some cityscape in the background.

Next we'll move inside for a couple of interiors along with a brief science lesson.

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Nighttime Cityscapes with Window Comparison

Above is a comparison of the darkest exposure within a bracket (1/6 sec shutter speed) next to the lightest, two frames removed (1/2 sec).  The brighter bank of windows in the latter was replaced with same from the former because they were blown out and looked solid white, as seen from the original below:

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Nighttime Cityscape with Ferris Wheel

Same shot here, panned to the right enough to include the Ferris wheel at the Aquarium restaurant, which naturally had to be stationary at the moment of capture.

In the case of the restaurant sign, which is a little blown out, I'm hoping that a darker exposure within the bracketed set is available so that it can be replaced, but we'll see...

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Nighttime Cityscapes #1

...and here we go with a shot that's dark enough to be called a night shot (as opposed to twilight).  Ever since taking on this photography thing I've been hungering for an opportunity to get a good cityscape of Houston at night, and here it was!  Everything was in place - good weather, great vantage point, time enough to take my time, and a nice ledge to prop the Bigger Cahoona up with my elbows.  I'm very thankful to have been able to capture "bucket list" shots such as these.

Zoomed in to 82mm for the pic below.  I didn't dare go any closer, as camera shake would have substantially reduced clarity:

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Twilight Cityscapes #2

Probably my favorite of the series...another twilight shot, bracketed to increase exposure just enough.

Bracketing sure saves a lot of pictures, and to me has become an indispensable feature of the Big and Bigger Cahoonas.  First used in a series from 2016, I learned that bracketing for exposure simply varies the shutter speed, which is great when the afternoon sun is out or in shots like this.  After capturing all exposures, you know that at least one of them will probably be passable.

Though taken a few minutes later, the picture below is almost identical and dark enough to segue into the night shots that follow:

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Twilight Cityscape #1

Heading into twilight now, the blue, cooler hues take over...

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Construction Silhouette #2

This shot - more purely a silhouette - was captured a few minutes later, after the sun had completely set.

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Construction Silhouette #1

This soft opening was an evening event, so the sun was sinking low by the time we made our way up to the rooftop.  Very fortunately, it was in a position to peek through an opening in one of the floors of this building under construction.  I'm satisfied with the effect, but would like to have had a star filter...

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Daylight Cityscape #4

This pic features the Harris County administration building head-on while showing the sun to the right during the classic "golden hour" time that evening.

I wasn't happy with the sky as it was captured originally (at bottom below) so replaced it using the gradient tool vertically, copying the colors of the sunset from other pictures.  But I wasn't entirely happy with that either because the sun was setting to the west, at the right from our perspective.  So I went back and applied the gradient diagonally, yielding the final product above.  Clicking on the picture above, then using the arrow keys to switch pictures back and forth gives a pretty good comparison of the modified sky.

Houston Downtown Soft Opening - Daylight Cityscape #3

Swinging my rig to the left revealed this sight - not only are there plenty of patterns, the reflections are better than average.  The result reminded me of the full reflection series captured in Denver, posted here.

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Daylight Cityscape #2

This slightly-zoomed-in shot (62 mm) brings things a little closer.  The art installations in the foreground are adjacent to Tranquility Park, and the reflections are more noticeable now.  Didn't even notice the jet until post-capture, but was pleased to see that it's framed in just the right place above the former Enron building.

Downtown Houston Soft Opening - Daylight Cityscape #1

Back in early November we were invited by the daughter of some friends of ours (an architect in the firm that designed the building) to the soft opening of a facility in downtown Houston.  Being a fan of cityscapes, we were there with the Bigger Cahoona in tow.

As it turns out, the experience provided more opportunities than expected.  The pic featured here shows the panoramic view available to us when we got there, and as the evening wore on I got the opportunity to get some good night shots of same.  In this series the focus will be on daylight, then twilight, then night shots, plus a few interiors of the amazing building we were touring.

Two Harbors - Final Sunrise Post

So far only sunrise pics from our first morning in Two Harbors have been posted, including this one.  The next two mornings, including bracketed shots, yielded 459 more sunrise pictures, some of which possibly are better than the ones you've seen so far.  For the sake of time, however, I'll stop here with the conviction that what we saw every day has been captured and shared.  Another time I'll comb through what's available from the other two mornings, and perhaps post as a reminder series.

And this also will be the last post from our trip to Minnesota.  A memorable trip, thanks in part to the pictures I was able to capture but for the most part due to our time with our son, his wife Ellen and newly-acquired familial friendships forged with her parents.

Next will be cityscapes of downtown Houston from atop one of its buildings...

Two Harbors - Sunrise with Dock (vertical)

Had to go down to the rocky shore to capture the dock's cornerpiece jutting into the sunrise.  Wider, horizontal perspective with less bokeh below:

Two Harbors - Sunrise with Dock (horizontal)

The over-the-top resolution of the Bigger Cahoona's 48MP sensor makes photomerging unnecessary if the right composition is captured.  The shots below are progressively cropped in to create the 5x7 frame at bottom.  A little brightening was used to enhance the light shining through the glass in the foreground:

Two Harbors - Sunrise Panorama

Similar to the pic posted the day before yesterday, this 3-shot panorama features a silhouette with the rising sun during the golden hour.  All three mornings of our stay in Two Harbors I had this time to myself, allowing all the time needed to snap away, and even do a little experimenting...
