Alaska Cruise - Ketchikan Rainforest Excursion, Foliage

Our first excursion of the cruise involved a trek into the rain forest to see the plant and animal life.  We had an awesome guide that was crazy about trees and knew all about those and the animals that we encountered.

Well, one animal.  We were trudging down the path, sort of in the back of the pack, when Chenjean noticed a large white slug clinging to a leaf.  I shouted ahead to the guide with a question about the critter, and he rushed back to share our discovery with the group.  Not only did he pick it up, but to our astonishment he licked it, encouraging others from the group to do the same (one girl did).  Seems the slime has anesthetic properties and makes your tongue and mouth quite numb...our erstwhile leader couldn't say his "s"s properly for about 15 minutes.

The pic posted here was snapped while we were still in the shed getting ready to divvy up between the guides and go on our walk.  It was raining, naturally, so I kept the Bigger Cahoona under wraps as soon as we stepped out, taking the occasional picture with the phone instead.
