As stated in the posted link, these betel nut trees took over the mountainside, supplanting the native flora that had been there since time immemorial. Fortunately, there is a movement afoot to reduce dependence on this cash crop, replacing it with plants that really belong there. Hope we see this begin to take place in the not-too-distant future.
